Michael Moore has a new film coming out next month.  This one, which focuses on the evils of capitalism, is sure to make us wonder why he still chooses to live in the US.  In response to this film I am posting an open letter to Mr. Moore.

Dear Michael,

According to your website and early reviews, your new film “Capitalism: A Love Story” revolves primarily around your outrage at the banking industry and the bailouts of lenders.  While I’m inclined to agree with you about the bailouts (much as I hate to admit that we may have something in common), there is another theme in your film that has me puzzled.  In your movie, you make a bold statement.  “Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil.” …”You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.”  Maybe it’s just my small conservative mind, but I’m a little confused.

You say capitalism is an evil.  Never mind the fact that it led to the industrialization of the civilized world, or that it led to countless breakthroughs in medicine and science, or even that it led to a young nation of immigrants becoming the most powerful country in the world.  You believe it is evil.  OK, for the sake of argument, let’s say that’s true.  And you also say that capitalism should be replaced with democracy.  While I’ve never heard of a financial system called “democracy,” I can only assume this means you want the public to have a greater say in financial affairs.  If so, I’m willing to take you up on that offer.  In fact, I’ve already got a plan.  I will be forming the Committee for the Re-evaluation of Appropriate Pay ( also known as CRAP), and guess what?   I’m willing to make you the star of our first investigation!!!

Under the CRAP-system, we will let the people decide exactly how much money you should have.   This will be determined by a good old-fashioned democratic vote on a few issues. First, we will start with the basics:

  • Do you know who Michael Moore is?
  • Have you seen a Michael Moore film?
  • Do you like Michael Moore’s movies?
  • Do you feel his movies provide an important service for the greater good of society?

As with all democratic proceedings, at least 51% will have to answer in the affirmative for you to make a dime.  Of Course, I know you’re not worried.  After all, you once said, “I’m a millionaire, I’m a multi-millionaire, I’m filthy rich. You know why I’m a multi-millionaire? ‘Cause multi-millions like what I do.”  Let’s hope you’re right!  Next, we will ask them to evaluate the money you’ve already earned under the evil capitalist system.

  • If a person who makes “documentaries” is known for playing fast and loose with the facts, should he be compensated for his work?
  • If a person pays money to see a documentary and then finds out it is factually incorrect, should he/she get their money back?
  • If a filmmaker claims his movie is funny and the viewer thinks it’s just obnoxious, should the viewer get his/her money back?
  • If a filmmaker who made millions in the free-market makes a film about the evils of the free-market, should he return his previous earnings?

Finally, in an effort to prove that we have been paying attention to your brave words, we will follow your lead.  If the people decide that you are an over-paid fraud, we will come to your office with a megaphone and demand to make a citizen’s arrest. I hope you are as excited about the CRAP-system as I am.  I can’t wait until the poll results are in!

  • It constantly amazes me how people confuse economic systems with government systems. If I recall correctly this was all explained in 8th or 9th grade. Michael Moore should re-educate himself.

Communism and Socialism would be great systems if it wasn’t for the sinful nature of mankind. They have been tried and failed every time, even here in America with the Pilgrims. Here is a good excerpt:

    Reference http://www.agem.com/Plymouth_Experiment.htm
“In short, the Pilgrims agreed to establish a commune, with all property and the fruits of all labor contributed into a common pool to be divided equally among the Pilgrims for their daily survival, and between the Pilgrims and the financiers at the end of the seven year contract. They called their arrangement a “commonwealth”, because all wealth — the product of their labors — was held in common, and there was no private property to speak of. The modern term for this is socialism. Even back then they had a word for it which we know today, derived from the concept of commonly owned property: communism. The arrangement was no more successful in the 17th century than it has been in our own century. Human nature being what it is, even among the pious Pilgrims, those who work and produce grow resentful when the fruits of their labor are taken and given over to those who do not work, in shares equal to their own, with no reward for their own hard labor.”

The whole issue with the debate over free enterprise and capitalism versus other economic systems will boil down to resentment. We are taught that stealing is wrong from the time we are old enough to grab for something that is not ours. It is too bad our law makers and current President don’t understand this.

Giving to the poor used to be the job of the Church. Since the government has taken it over it has become quite a mess. Even the Church has started to say “Charity? What is that? Doesn’t the government handle all this?”

The reason the Church is not accepted by the government as the best way to deal with poverty in America is the so called separation of Church and State. This was never meant to be what we have interpreted it to be today. It was supposed to be a guarantee against Government run Churches, not Government and Churches working together for the betterment of the country.

Socialism is nothing more than a Government run Church with no God at its head. This leads to bad decisions every day since the State run Church has no moral guidelines to prevent money and help being given to those who have no desire to support themselves. There is an old saying “The Lord helps those who help themselves.”

I’m all for taking care of the mentally and physically handicapped. Who I am not in favor of helping is those who can but will not help themselves which is likely 90% of those receiving our hard earned tax dollars.

Michael, if you are so rich and so noble why don’t you just give it all away? Nope, at the center of almost every human being beats the heart of a capitalist.
