March 12, 2010 The Pennsylvania Ballet: This Weekend Only! Posted by Samantha Lazar Filed in: Arts Photo courtesy the Pennsylvania Ballet The Pennsylvania Ballet is one of the country’s most renowned ballet companies, drawing gray-haired aficionados and wide-eyed children to its home on the Avenue of the Arts all season long. This month marks the 200th birthday of Frederic Chopin , the great master of Romantic music, and the Ballet is all set to celebrate. The company’s Program III , which is only being presented for two performances – this Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon – pays homage to Chopin. It features three diverse works set to the composer’s music. In The Crossed Line , Matthew Neenan (one of Philly’s most exciting choreographers) explores the shifting nature of relationships, making classical technique seem startlingly fresh and edgy. In the Night is a sexy piece depicting three different stages of love: tender and young, mature and balanced, and intensely passionate. The Concert is a comedic piece set at a piano recital. It’s witty and satirical, and supposedly side-splittingly funny. Hysterical ballet? I’m going to have to see this for myself! Throw a little culture into your weekend and check out the Ballet. If you’re not picky about your seats and are lucky enough to be a student, rush tickets are available for the ridiculously cheap price of $15 an hour before each show! The Republicans had a huge evening last night. Picking up the governors seats in Virginia and the true stunner, New Jersey. On the Pennsylvania level the GOP did pretty well too. They won all the statewide races but one. Granted most of the races were for judge or court positions, but still only one Pennsylvania Republican lost. So what does it all mean to Pennsylvania and you?
First, the chances that the East Coast could have states dominated by Republican governors just went up. If Rudy decides to get in the race in New York, its almost certain he will win. In Massachusetts the Democrats are looking at a blood bath in the governors race. In Ohio former congressman John Kasik is running and stands a very good chance of bringing Ohio into the GOP camp. Since Virginia and now New Jersey are now in the GOP lineup, that leaves only PA. If the state Republicans start acting like they want to win, the odds just went up that they will. The 2010 elections look like they cou
ld be shaping up as a large movement to the “right”. Believe me, New Jersey is much “bluer” than Pennsylvania is.
Second, the issue now is Barrack Hussein Obama, not George Bush. Recent polls show that its close to an even split on who is responsible for the economy. That is the single worst piece of news Obama could possibly get. Obama ran an entire campaign against George Bush who could not fight back because he wasn’t in the race. If the public is now deciding that Obama owns the economy, Democrats and Obama are in a world of hurt. Obama could bring down who ever the Democrats run for the Senate, he could spread his magic to the House races as well. Look into Virginia, not only did the governors race go to the GOP, but so did all the down ballot races, and by large numbers as well. In New Jersey Democrats brought in people from Philly to help, but it didn’t.
Pennsylvania has gone in the “D” column for awhile now, without Philadelphia carrying the ball for the Dems, it would not. What happened last night was the Obama machine failed. The voters he counted on were not there last night. Blacks, Hispanics and the Youth Vote, didn’t show up in numbers they needed to. They seem to have lost the drive they had last year. Maybe they just show up for Obama, I don’t know. But what I do know is that without a huge jump start to the economy and soon, there isn’t enough drive in the world to stop what could be a Republican revival in a big way. That big way includes Pennsylvania.
