The Beauty of Bells

6 pm Sunday, March 18
Derry Presbyterian Church
248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, PA  17033
717-533-9667 • derrypres.org

The 14 accomplished musicians comprising the Derry Ringers will present “The Beauty of Bells” under the direction of Helen Anthony, the church’s Director of Music and Organist.

The Derry Ringers have been ringing praises to the Lord during Sunday morning worship services at Derry Presbyterian Church for the past 20 years. For this special evening concert, the bell ringers will play tunes not typically heard on Sunday morning: “Rock Around the Clock,” “The Chicken Dance,” and “Tarantella,” as well as favorites including “Give Me Jesus.” A 20-piece orchestra will provide accompaniment for some of the selections. The Derry Ringers will also play with just strings, just brass, and just the bells.

The concert is part of the church’s 2012 Arts Alive cultural series.  No admission will be charged; a free-will offering will benefit the Harrisburg Boys & Girls Club. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.

Into the Night with Gershwin

7 pm Saturday, February 25, 2012
Derry Presbyterian Church
248 East Derry Road
Hershey, PA  17033

The acclaimed pianist Thomas Pandolfi, a leading interpreter of the works of George Gershwin, will perform “Rhapsody in Blue” and improvisations on six Gershwin favorites in addition to the Concerto in F (solo version).

A graduate of The Juilliard School, Pandolfi earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as a scholarship student. He tours extensively through the United States and abroad. Recent highlights have included the world premiere of British composer Simon Proctor’s dazzling and unique “James Bond” Piano Concerto in London, debuts with The Cluj Philharmonic in Romania, The Great Falls Symphony (MT), The Allegro Chamber Orchestra (PA), The Memphis Symphony (TN), and The American Festival Pops Orchestra as part of the Gala Opening Night of Merchant Hall at the spectacular new Hylton Performing Arts Center in Virginia.

Free will offering. Reception following in Fellowship Hall.

“Pandolfi’s technique is brilliant. Every note, however fleeting, was cleanly and clearly stated, and themes rolled out of supporting structures, as clear as could be…the climax of the concert was the famed Rhapsody in Blue (in a solo arrangement created by Gershwin himself), performed with thrilling virtuosity. It was jazzy, it was classical, it was Gershwin, wonderfully done.”
